Our very own "Sleevie Wonder"

Props to Yoga For You! teacher and designer Ann Fink! Her designs caught the eye of Pop Fizz Daily, a blog telling Twin Cities folks about all things cool.
Ann's fun and functional sleeves keep you toasty warm, while upping your hip factor. We love them! Hmm... I'm going to go slip on my own velvety purple pair right now to add some sass to this chilly afternoon.
Soak up some of Ann's infectious energy during one of her Yoga For You! Vinyasa Flow classes, Fridays at 11 a.m. Prepare to become addicted to Friday mornings...

Stay warm,

Welcome to the Blooma blog!

Today we’re relaunching the Blooma blog, and we’d love for you to think of this blog-o-sphere as an extension of the community you’re a part of when you’re at Blooma in person. Welcome!

Since Sarah Longacre opened Blooma in October 2007 with her loving arms, talent for inspiring moms and moms-to-be, and cadre of gifted teachers and body workers, I have come to feel a special affection for Blooma. (We hope you feel that way, too.)

First I came as a newly pregnant mama who found a nurturing, supportive community where I learned to embrace my blooming belly and made new friends. Sampling the various prenatal classes gave me the chance to figure out which teachers would challenge me (sometimes seriously challenge me!) and which would give me a relaxing wind-down at the end of an intense day. I also adored my prenatal Maya abdominal massages (and that awesome massage table with the holes for my belly and boobs that actually allowed me to lie face down—bliss!).

After my son Graham—now 13 months old—was born, we hurried back to Blooma, looking for familiar faces. In our BYOB (Bring Your Own Baby) classes, Graham and I reconnected with mamas I’d done sun salutations next to when he was in my belly. We also got to admire my prenatal yoga friends’ beautiful babies who were on the outside now. We shared stories, new mama woes, and some of us began to meet outside of class, too. It’ll be just a few more months until we’re ready for Tot Yoga, and meanwhile I’m back into my own yoga groove with Yoga For You! classes. Not all cities have a place like this and I am grateful that I can boast otherwise.

As a birth doula and certified infant massage instructor, I’m into all this mama + baby stuff anyway. But when I was pregnant, and now as a mother, I came to appreciate even more what Blooma offers to my family. My husband has come to partner workshops with me, and my mother-in-law has practiced with me side-by-side, learning how to do simple yoga poses with her grandson at home. I’ve since trained with Lisa Bergley, developer of YogaBonding, and now teach BYOB at Blooma on alternating Mondays and Saturdays. I teach an occasional infant massage class, too. If I haven’t already, I hope to meet you soon!

Please subscribe to the blog, too. I’ll be blogging regularly about everything mama- and family-related including:

• upcoming Blooma workshops + classes

• the latest pregnancy + parent-related health news

• links to hip, funny, or informative parenting stories
• pregnancy + parenting blog postings (send me your own blog links!)
• guest blogs from Blooma teachers and body workers, midwives + OBs

• postings from Sarah and other doulas, who will share their favorite tips + tricks
for labor
• "Blooma Bookclub" reading recommendations

• and of course we’ll keep you in the loop with the ever popular “Blossoms” updates: photos of Blooma babies (and preferably their mamas, too) as they make their grand entrance into this big, beautiful world.

So that’s a little something about me, your Blooma blogger. I’d love to learn about you, too. Leave a comment and tell us what Blooma means to you—we’d love to hear your thoughts!

Love,

Alisa, Sarah, & the women of Blooma

Welcome Nan Arundel!

Nan brings her bright spirit to Blooma for Yoga for You!!

About Nan:
Born smack dab in the middle of summer, Nan comes by her love of sun and heat naturally. So ten years ago, smack dab in the middle of a cold Minnesota winter, when she stumbled into a yoga class and realized she could find the sun by saluting it and heat built by her own breath, thus saving her a ticket to Mexico, a nice little crush developed. Though initially feeling quite inflexible and not sure what foot/arm/hip/head went where, she was charmed enough by the mini-nap at the end of every practice to stick with it. And then sure enough, breath by breath, pose by pose, sutra by sutra, the technology of yoga worked its magic on her. What had begun as a small crush turned into a full-blown love affair as Nan opened herself to learning about and sharing her enthusiasm for yoga. Now, having studied with master instructors Jessica Rosenberg, Jeffrey Bores, Manju Patthabi Jois and teacher training with Annie Carpenter of YogaWorks in Sydney, Australia, Nan teaches yoga in corporate settings, studios, and private sessions around town. Her vinyasa classes combine a deep awareness of anatomy, sequencing, alignment, and yogic philosophy while inspiring a playful spirit. One of her students calls her, “the Warrior of the Open Heart.” When Nan isn’t sporting yoga clothes, you can find her elbow deep in dirt designing someone’s garden, clad in an apron catering someone’s party, walking one of the lakes, or at the airport off to satiate her endless hunger for travel and experiencing the world.

Welcome Kim Bosanko!

Please join us in welcoming our newest instructor
Kim Bosanko this week at Blooma!

We are offering her class FREE this Saturday (4/4) at 8am.

Kim is well-known in the Minneapolis and CorePower yoga communities. Her packed classes at CorePower are highly respected and sought-out, so join us this Saturday to give Kim a warm Blooma welcome!

ABOUT KIM:
High stress level and constant travel of a corporate job left little time for healthy eating or exercise. Pledging a commitment to a healthier body and mind, Kim changed her eating habits and exercised consistently at a local gym. As her body began to change, becoming stronger and leaner, so did her attitude and goals of what she wanted in life. After significant weight loss, Kim sought a beginner Yoga class at the gym to improve flexibility. She quickly fell in love with Yoga and how it made her body feel, the calm centeredness in her mind and spirit, feeling a grounding and safety she never felt before. Kim wanted "to give back" and realized what she was meant to do in life. Kim completed Yogafit training February 2006 and graduated Corepower Teacher training July 2006 and with a happy heart left her position in the corporate world to teach yoga full-time and has enjoyed teaching each and everyday since. It is a dream that became a goal that became a reality! She has since studied under Ana Forrest, Rusty Wells, Cameron Shayne and Manju Pattabi Jois.

Kim brings a kind, gentle spirit and a smile wherever she goes, always willing to help anyone with a genuine love for all.
