Kundalini yoga intro: Jan. 22, 2009

Awaken to Kundalini yoga. Deepen your yoga practice through a 90-minute exploration of body, mind and spirit.

Welcome 2009 with a traditional Kundalini yoga class taught by Helena Raghubir, owner of the Center for Happiness in Minneapolis. Kundalini, the yoga of awareness, works with the glandular system to remove obstacles for enlightened living.

This class will challenge participants in body, mind and spirit through a series of asanas. Through the unique movements of Kundalini (unlike the familiar vinyasa-style flows in our Yoga For You Classes), we will learn a new way to let go of old patterns and come to a state of complete balance and bliss. Come for asana, meditation and time shared with other Blooma friends!

So you may have a really good idea how to establish breastfeeding, but what happens after the first few weeks? How does breastfeeding change as baby grows? The American Academy of Pediatrics states that babies should ideally receive only breast milk for the first 6 months of life with age-appropriate foods added after that time. We'll give you the information and strategies that you need to feel confident and successful in your goal to breastfeed 6, 9, 12 months and beyond! Partners are encouraged to attend for no additional charge.

Body Image workshop: January 10, 2009

How we view our bodies is largely influenced by the stories we tell ourselves about them. Through yoga, body memory, and writing, explore the origin of our personal body stories and how those stories shape our physical journey through life.

Join us for an early evening of writing and yoga with Blooma Teacher Cori Levin and writer Roxanne Sadovsky.

About your guides:

Cori Levin welcomed yoga into her life in 2005 when she needed guidance beyond the advice of family and friends. The following year, she deepened her practice while turning inward in preparation for pregnancy, birth, and motherhood. Yoga allowed her to stay present with all the beautiful changes going on inside her body. Cori completed the Corepower Vinyasa teacher training program in 2007. She continues to learn from her yoga mentors and her students, and she recognizes that her yoga journey is continuously evolving and growing. Her mentors and her students see Cori as a caring and nurturing teacher who has a true presence about herself. She teaches her students to follow their heart, both on and off the mat! Cori lives with her husband, Gennady, in Minneapolis , and she is proud that yoga has become the foundation of her and her daughter Zoraya’s life.

Roxanne Sadovsky, MA, MFA is a Twin Cities freelance writer and teacher with a focus on writing as healing. Her gentle and supportive approach to group facilitation creates a safe and inspiring environment for students to use writing to explore themes and memories surrounding living a whole life. She holds a masters degree in counseling psychology from Antioch University Seattle and creative nonfiction from The University of Minnesota and currently teaches at the Loft Literary Center. She currently writes the "Commitments" column for Minneapolis St. Paul Magazine, and has been published in Twin Cities Jewish Life, aislesay.com, Minnesota Monthly, Twin Cities Wellness, Utne, The Seattle Times, Seattle Magazine, Cafe 80s, Show and Tell, Byline, and many more. She lives in South Minneapolis with her husband, 14 month-old son Jude, and 2 cats. She is grateful for this opportunity to co-facilitate with such magical women warriors!

Blooma Blossom: Chase

Mama Mandy says: My goal and motivation for this birth was: fast, easy delivery! And that was the case! After being 4 days overdue, Chase was more than ready and eager to make his appearance. I labored at home from 8am to 11:45am on Dec. 21. Dad was more than ready to get to the hospital and that was a good thing! He loaded the car and as soon as mom got into the car, contractions went from a 4/5 pain level to a 8/9. We pulled into the parking ramp at 12:06 pm. Dad couldn't find a spot right away! Finally we got into admitting. I went through two contractions and was rushed to the delivery room to be checked -- I was at an 8! Two more contractions and Chase was ready to see the world. I pushed three hard times and that was it. Dad didn't have to do a thing this time, just let me squeeze his hand very hard. All the yoga and breathing practice helped get us through. Also learning the word "out" from Sarah and saying that over and over until Chase came was a huge help! Overall, the three of us are doing great!

Do your yoga for good!

Karma yoga is a form of yoga that is done expressly for the benefit of others. It's a chance to give while expecting nothing in return, and it nearly always leaves your heart feeling lighter and your spirit feeling like it's doing the good that it was made to do.

This month, we're making it easy for you to practice a little karma yoga. Off the Mat, Into the World is a campaign supported by renowned yogini Sean Corne to help Cambodian orphans. If you'll dedicate your practice to the cause this month, we'll donate your class fee. Thanks to the generosity of our instructors who've volunteered their time to teach, we are donating 100% of the funds from several December classes. Please join us for these good karma events:

What do you have to know about yoga to practice at Blooma? Nothing!

Here's what Abbie J., mother of two, shared with us about her first experience with yoga and Blooma:

"I've never taken yoga before. Last Friday and this Monday were my first two classes--EVER. It was obvious that there were people who REALLY knew their stuff, but the atmosphere was so pleasant and welcoming that I didn't feel intimidated at all. I just left feeling like I want to take more and more classes. The focus felt like it was about taking the time for myself, to re-fuel myself, to be a better "myself"!!!"

Before you decorate the nursery...

Decorate the belly! Henna art is a beautiful, temporary way to decorate your belly in celebration of the life growing within! Sarah, local henna artist and owner of SaraCura, offers this explanation:

"Henna has been a tradition around the world for millennia. This simple bush leaf is responsible for many long-lasting temporary designs. A variety of cultures have traditions associated with Mehndi, the art of henna application. The most famous are India’s wedding extravaganzas. Another beautiful tradition is the decoration of pregnant bellies. It is said to protect the unborn and to bring an easy, safe birth for the mother."

Sarah loves to decorate bellies! If you're
considering a Blessing Way, henna is a sweet ritual for you and your friends and family. Learn more about Sarah's henna at www.saracura.com/henna.html or call Blooma (952 848 1111) to find out about scheduling a henna party or adding henna to your Blessing Way.
